First, a pretty GIF and then answering some questions.
batchix: Random fact about you?
I’m twenty-seven (twenty-eight next month) and I have never broken a bone. I sprained my left wrist when I was 19, but that’s the worst injury I’ve had.
strange-stimuli: What inspired you to start morbid fashion? Like the a-ha moment.
I was following a lot of gothic fashion blogs at the time (Dirty Flaws, Haute Macabre, Coilhouse, etc.) and I wanted a place that I could collect all of my favorite pictures from them to share with other people. I NEVER thought it would blow up like it did.
little-bit-dramatic: What are your thoughts on the goth ‘scene’?
Oi, I have a lot of respect for those that go hardcore with their gothic style like Gothic Charm School. I really appreciate the history, the culture, the music and do not envy Goths that grew up before me that had even more limited access to the sorts of clothing they wanted to be able to wear. However, like many subcultures out there, I really fucking hate the elitist part of it. I hate the idea of there being one standard of “Gawth Enuff” to be considered a valid part of the culture. Those things just make me tired.
Subcultures, like the rest of the world, change and evolve and learn. Everyone grows up at a different time, different places and bring different things to the table. Your siblings influences will be different from your own, your children’s will be vastly different and there’s nothing wrong with that. I have major issues with the notion that subcultures like Goth or Punk should remain exactly as they were when they first came about. The world isn’t like that and I think it’s dismissive and limiting to people that would enjoy those subcultures, but chose not to participate because they don’t want to follow the old “rules.”
mia2310: What is your favorite book?
Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman. I also love: Good Omens by Neil Gaiman & Terry Pratchett; A Dirty Job by Christopher Moore; The Cut & Run series by Abigail Roux & Madeleine Urban; and the Anita Blake series by Laurell K. Hamilton
I like spooky, weird and smut. Especially when they’re all together.
Put this in my ask:
- Meaning behind tumblr url:
- Why you follow me:
- Random fact about yourself:
- Question for me:
I’ll compile your questions into bulk posts, because the last time I tried doing this and answered/posted them one at a time ya’ll lost your shit.
MSI was always really funny live. They were my husband’s favorite band in high school (mine was Orgy) so we saw them together those three times, he’s seen them a few more than I have. I think Jimmy Urine is getting tired of touring, but he still makes the shows fun. Even when he is ordering someone in the audience to get him a hot dog or trying to eat someone’s cigarette. ;)
Oh, fun fact! Zoetica Ebb was an extra in their “Shut Me Up" video because it was directed by Jhonen Vasquez (artist for that album and creator of Johnny the Homicidal Maniac) who is a friend of hers. She’s in line with a hoodie on and a frizzy wig at 2:27.
Okay, enough about MSI… onto the questions!
13: What would you consider to be the biggest insult to yourself?
I’m one of those “I was an honor student, I don’t know what happened” people. So I suppose attempting to insult my intelligence or work ethic? I don’t get insulted very easily to be honest.
20: What is one of your favorite song lyrics? (Who is it by?)
Fuck… uhm. From the Sweeney Todd soundtrack, “No Place Like London”:
There’s a hole in the world like a great black pit / and the vermin of the world inhabit it / and its morals aren’t worth what a pin can spit / and it goes by the name of London… / At the top of the hole sit the privileged few / Making mock of the vermin in the lonely zoo / turning beauty to filth and greed… / I too have sailed the world and seen its wonders, / for the cruelty of men is as wondrous as Peru / but there’s no place like London!
From the Desperado soundtrack “Strange Face of Love” by Tito & Tarantula:
A cat’s eye, a lizard’s tail / The pentagram he bought in hell / He stalks the night with no intent / His brow sweats for innocence / And take it like a man… The strange face of love
"Horizons" by Puscifer:
Dust devil swept you away / It’s still not real / Ash and urn and silence / Talk to me / Dust devil swept you away / My recollections are all that’s left of you / Swirl and sway / Without me
24: What celebrity do you idolize the most?
Henry Rollins because he’s very intelligent in that self-taught, well-read sort of way. He’s passionate about a bajillion things (technical and accurate number, I swear). He travels EVERYWHERE. He does a lot of activist and charity work. He is also hilarious live on his spoken word tours, which I have seen twice.
2: Name a favorite of each: food, drink, color.
I love, fucking LOVE, Carnitas which is a pulled pork thing you can get at every “Mexican” restaurant here in the Western US that is worth anything. I love it with pico de gallo and a Root Beer. For some reason I need to eat Mexican food with Root Beer, it’s a quirk. Thanks to our relative closeness to the Mexican border California, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas have some of the best food ever.
My real favorite drink, or what you’ll catch me drinking 80% of the time, is energy drinks and mineral water.
My favorite color is grey because it’s versatile… or neon pink/yellow-green.
4: Name a favorite of each: book, movie, tv show.
Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman.
Desperado is my favorite movie. I love the whole trilogy: El Mariachi, Desperado & Once Upon a Time In Mexico, but Desperado has been one of my favorites since I was a kid and caught it on TV.
The Fifth Element is a very close second or tie for my favorite movie.
My favorite TV Show is Torchwood. It’s an almost perfect combination of all of my favorite, nerdiest things.
8: What kind of underwear do you prefer wearing?
I don’t think I’ll answer that.
9: Name a LEAST favorite of each: book, movie, tv show.
Book: The DaVinci Code, I couldn’t get into it and EVERYONE was in love with it when I worked at a bookstore. Movie: Duets, a CRAP movie with Gwenyth Paltrow and I could not do it. TV Show: Those Dr. shows they put on in the afternoons on basic cable for old people. We lived with my father-in-law for a month last year while we were in the midst of moving from California to Arizona and every afternoon those shows were on and they just prey on people’s fear of dying and ignorance of how to take care of themselves. I wouldn’t say they’re the shows I’ll freak out and dive for the remote to spare myself from, but I don’t have respect for them.
10: If you were sat on a plane beside your favorite celebrity, what would you do?
Continue reading and try not to make a fuss about it, while secretly freaking the fuck out. That sounds right.
12: What is a weird habit you have, or people have told you have. (Weird, not bad. No nail biting or any of that nonsense.)
My coworkers when I worked at LUSH said I was creepy. One put it, “You’re creepy like John Waters. It’s not a bad thing, it’s just a fact.” I don’t really know what they mean… but it was the best compliment I have gotten in years.
16: Which band (current or past) would you want to go on tour* with? (*Travel with, not perform with.)
I honestly have no clue. One with genuinely talented musicians, where they all pretty much get along and have fun/a sense of humor. One that travels all over the world and needs help with their equipment I suppose. One that doesn’t fuck with drugs or binge drink too.
17: Name a favorite of each: band, album, song.
My favorite band? I don’t know of any that I love every album from to be honest. Alanis Morissette, The Offspring, Orgy and Tool have been safe bets in the past. Album: Vol. 1 & Vol. 2 by Hurt Song: “Devil’s Dance Floor" by Flogging Molly.
21: Who do you ship?
Destiel, Spock/Kirk/McCoy (space husbands!), Captain Jack Harkness & Ianto Jones, Mulder/Scully, Legolas/Aragorn
25: Which member from which band would you most want to lather in nutella?
Probably Jared Leto after seeing the 30 Seconds to Mars “Hurricane" video. That link is supposed to go to the long version, but I didn’t sit through all 21:00+ minutes to figure out if that is true or not.
5: If you were given the opportunity to spend 48 hours with absolutely anyone (living or dead), who would you spend it with and what would you do?
I think I would travel to a foreign country and wander around with Henry Rollins. Dude is a travel geek and I think it would be fascinating to see that.
3: If you married rich and your spouse gave you $100,000 a week, what would you spend it on?
Holy shit, uhm… Honestly it would mostly go to charity work after I took care of a basic wardrobe, car and residence. Charities for sexual/reproductive health, LGBTQ organizations (especially the ones that help homeless LGBTQ teens that have been kicked out of their homes for coming out), foodbanks, etc. I have no actual use for that much money other than to redistribute it.
11: What is the strangest thing you have in your room? (You are not allowed to explain why you own it.)
A Dremel: http://www.dremel.com/Pages/default.aspx
14: What are five things you absolutely have to have in your dream house?
I am such an interior design nerd, this question makes me happy. 1) I need to have at least two floors with one big open area like this. 2) An office on the top floor that has a lot of windows like this. 3) A kitchen that’s bright with an island and breakfast bar like this. 4) Barcelona chairs and the matching couch or a similarly tufted black leather couch. 5) Wood floors or one of the well done faux wood tile floors like this. I grew up in rented single level homes with white walls and industrial carpet. Having a house that I can not only decorate the way that I want but also have amenities I always associated with having a nice house? That would be awesome. Growing up in rental homes is one of the major reasons I am obsessed with interior decor.
19: How many concerts have you attended? Which was your favorite? Least favorite? If none, who do you want to see live the most?
(Appropriate GIF, because I need to think to remember them.)
I have attended a lot of concerts. My dad and I saw almost every major rock or punk band that came to Sacramento while I was in high school (1999 - 2003, holy shit it will be ten years since I’ve graduated in less than a week). Having younger parents that had similar music tastes as a teen was pretty awesome.
I have seen, from what I remember, these bands live. In parenthesis I’ve put the approximate number of times I’ve seen them, I’ll bold the ones I love and strikethrough those I didn’t.
The Offspring (2x), Unwritten Law, ROB ZOMBIE, Korn (2x), Blink 182 (2x), Linkin Park (2x), Orgy (2x), Deadsy, Papa Roach (2x), Deftones (once when they came onstage with Papa Roach at a Family Values tour show, two hometown bands), No Doubt (2x), TOOL, The Distillers, Garbage, Julien-k, Mindless Self Indulgence (3x), Flogging Molly, Tsunami Bomb, Smashmouth, Lit, Sugar Ray, The Birthday Massacre, London After Midnight (Sean Brennan is still gorgeous), Cypress Hill, Linkin Park (2x - I know, I know, but they were actually pretty amazing to see live in Sacramento because it was always huge arena shows and EVERYONE knew EVERY FUCKING WORD which was … staggering to say the least), Hell Yeah, My Chemical Romance, …Project Revolution Tour 2007 tour, Family Values Tour 2001 & Family Values Tour 2007. I left that last Family Values Tour early after we saw Five Finger Death Punch because… Korn is not good live and some drunk rednecks were in our seats so we decided it wasn’t worth it.
I miss going to concerts.
15: If you could be reincarnated as any animal, which would you chose and why?
A red panda! They’re adorable and feisty.
I agree. This is especially true for Gothic and Punk styles (which I think are very much related in their current states, I know what I post is heavily influenced by both subcultures).
I’m enjoying it as well. I’ve had a terrible time trying to find new music in the last few years and the music Wednesday thing is helping with that a lot.
